Gov. Deval Patrick is requesting federal assistance for Massachusetts hospitals that treat a disproportionate share of patients covered by designated state health plans (DSHPs) such as MassHealth, as well as treating the uninsured.

Federal matching funds to the DSHPs under the state’s Medicaid waiver are slated to decrease in both the current fiscal year and the next.

To avoid the reductions, Patrick would have to apply for an amendment to the state’s Medicaid waiver that would allow the state to claim a larger percentage of matching funds.
